Government intervention call over Leeds children's heart unit
Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood is supporting attempts to convince the government to intervene over plans to close the children's heart unit in Leeds.
Mr Wood said: "I greatly regret that Leeds was not one of the centres continuing to carry out child cardiac surgery. I fully support the work that is going on in Parliament by MPs of all parties from all over Yorkshire to get the government to have another look at this decision.
"In particular they need to pay attention to the number of operatons necessary to increase the safety of very sick children, the patients these centres are there to serve. The numbers are crucial to this debate and I firmly believe that Leeds and not Newcastle is the only sustainable option here.
"It seems as though there’s a backing away from adhering to the previously agreed criteria, and this is unacceptable. Too many factors have been ignored in making this decision and it’s right we look to the government to intervene and rectify this."
