
The Mike Wood Citizenship Award
This award was established by Mike Wood in March 2004. It recognises
exceptional contributions made by individuals and organisations for
the benefit of the people of Batley and Spen.
Max Rathmell - 19 March 2004 -
Presented by the Rt Hon Robin Cook MP
For commitment over more than 30 years to the environment of the Spen
Valley through his central involvement with: Spen Valley Civic Society;
Cleckheaton Bottoms Campaign; Spen Valley Spark; The Savoy Square Project;
Gomersal Green Homes. Max Rathmell’s contribution to these campaigns,
projects and organisations has immeasurably improved the environment
to the benefit of all those who live and work in the Spen Valley.
Shirley Whiteley - 25 March 2005 - Presented by Mike Wood MP
For her commitment and service to the people of Littletown, a community she has served as postmistress for 18 years, and for her charitable and fundraising efforts in particular for the McMillan nurses appeal.
Sadly, Shirley Whiteley passed away in December 2007.
Jane Dick - 23 November 2007 - Presented by Mike Wood MP
For her work and commitment to working on behalf of and for the benefit of the people and communities of Birstall through her central involvement with countless organisations and committees, such as: the Labour party, Batley and Spen Co-operative Party, Fieldhead Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, Birstall St Peter’s school, and countless council and housing bodies.

For a lifetime of dedication and service to the town of Batley and in particular his work in preserving, documenting and promoting the town’s rich heritage through his central involvement with: the Civic Society; Community Alliance; the Cemetery Support Group; Batley Conservation Group; the Environment Forum; Batley Rotary Club; as well as through his substantial and important work as a writer, historian and journalist and through numerous other campaigns. His work has ensured immeasurable improvements for Batley and preserves the town’s history and heritage for future generations.
