The Batley and Spen Fairtrade constituency campaign was launched to promote Fairtrade products within our Parliamentary constituency.
A steering group was formed by Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood that now co-ordinates the campaign to create what we believe would be the country’s first Fairtrade constituency. The steering group consists of volunteers from different sections of the local community.
The aim of Fairtrade is to tackle poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better, fairer deal for themselves and their workforce. Towns, cities and other Fairtrade zones contribute to this campaign by encouraging support for Fairtrade mark products in their localities.
This is primarily through publishing a local Fairtrade directory that lists the shops and other services offering Fairtrade. The campaign also encourages other organisations, businesses, schools and places of worship to offer Fairtrade goods to their staff, pupils and customers etc.
